About Us

Taking excellent care of Cornish animals since the 1870s

They say that two heads are better than one, and we’ve certainly found that to be the case!
Our mixed practice in the picturesque market town of Helston has been caring for a variety of species for over a century, and our patients include pets, farm animals, horses, camelids, birds and reptiles. We even treat seals!
We were founded in the late 1870s by Charles Hoadley, the first qualified vet to work in Cornwall, and he was later joined by his son in law, Alfred Head, and his brother Stanley Head.
When Charles retired, the brothers decided to name the practice after themselves, and Head and Head was born.
Our practice has continued to expand and thrive over the years under the watchful eye of a number of talented veterinary professionals, including another member of the Head family, John Head, who was one of the first vets in Cornwall to introduce regular preventative herd health visits for farm clients.
We spent 77 years at our Coinage Hall premises, before moving to the modern site our clients know and love in Water-Ma-Trout in 1988.

Today you can find four spacious consulting rooms, fully equipped operating theatres, sophisticated diagnostic tools, dental machines, a well stocked dispensary, extensive hospitalisation facilities and more.
We provide our own 24 hour emergency service for all small animal, farm and equine clients, 24/7, 365 days a year, meaning you can always see one of our vets and won’t need to travel to another practice.
Our nursing team is also available on call out of hours, and are on hand to help with emergency operations and intensive medical cases.

Our Team

Our nursing team is also available on call out of hours, and are on hand to help with emergency operations and intensive medical cases.
Small animal patients can benefit from a wide range of services like preventative treatments, vaccinations, exotic care and diagnostics, and we have great links with external specialists if your pet ever requires more complex treatment.
Our farm team can advise on everything from export certification and herd health visits to parasite control plans and camelids, and offer experienced and individual care for local farms.

Meanwhile, our equine department can assist with passports, microchipping, vaccinations, dental care, castration and more for all horses, ponies and donkeys.
With plenty of parking available onsite and on the road outside, and a separate large animal entrance and reception area, you can expect an efficient visit every time.
